Located on an old quarry-top site and 600 metres from Cottesloe beach, Clarendon Street Residence is inspired by both its site’s heritage and coastal environment.
The contemporary three-level family home sits nestled on an elevated site with views spanning the Darling Scarp. Appearing as a series of layered floating forms, its architecture is responsive to its coastal site helping lessen the structure’s mass impact. The gentle overlying of form also creates a dynamic interaction, blurring the lines between its architecture and the landscape.
To make the most of the home’s prominent north facing frontage, an expansive outdoor entertaining and informal living space sit at the front of the home, whilst inside a series of additional sunlit living spaces flow throughout.
The home’s relaxed and understated aesthetic is expressed through its raw materiality and textural surfaces. Natural limestone and bleached timber in soft coastal hues, like sand, grey, stone and mist, help create a sense of being both indoors and out.
Encompassing generous rooms and soaring ceilings, the home’s vast and loosely defined spaces merge seamlessly into one another, whilst walls of glass embrace the garden creating stunning sightlines throughout the home.
Entirely self-sufficient, the home is installed with a passive solar system including rainwater harvesting, solar panel systems, and an energy efficient hydronic floor system. In summer, the large glass sliding doors are opened up to allow the sea breeze to sweep through.
